6.11.9. Error message "traffic-gen action is invalid"
displayed : when and why ?
(BZ#: 5613)
Description: Whenever traffic generation on a port is not allowed, above indicated error message
is displayed after using command traffic-gen action start. There are several reasons why a
traffic-gen action start is rejected by the line-card. The following list shows a few of such
reasons.
1. Using traffic-gen on a non-preferred user port.
fiberdriver(port/1.2.3)# show
Port: 1.2.3
Name: SFP at 1.2.3
Protocol: Ethernet
Rate: 1000Base-T/X 1 Gbps
Enable: enable
Link: no Signal LIN: disable
Speed: 1 Gbps
Preferred: no
Auto Neg: on
Auto Neg Wait: 4
Connector: removed
fiberdriver(port/1.2.3)# traffic-gen action start
fdrd[81]|kern| err|Aug 13 00:45:14 At 1.2.3 traffic-gen action is invalid
2. Enabling traffic-gen on a port with traffic-gen already started on some other port on the same module.
fiberdriver(port/1.2.4)# traffic-gen action start
fiberdriver(port/1.2.4)# port 2
fiberdriver(port/1.2.2)# traffic-gen action start
fdrd[81]|kern| err|Aug 13 00:46:24 At 1.2.2 traffic-gen action is invalid
In addition to the reasons listed above, there may be a few more reasons why traffic-gen may be rejected
by the line-card.
Suggested Work-Around: Try to rectify the problem and then issue the traffic-gen command again.
In the first example listed above, you may want to issue preferred on port 1.2.3 (be aware that this will
render port 1.2.4 inactive), and confirm it with a show, and then use traffic-gen action start
on port 1.2.3 again.
Customer Impact: Minimal. Informational only.
Corrective Action: This issue will be addressed in a future software upgrade.
